about

This summer, Mojo Filter, the Brainiac mind behind popular Bandcamp series ‘AOR Disco Vintage Edits’ and ‘Modern Re-Loves’, re-emerges from his pastoral Norfolk homestead to ignite festival dancefloors and spiralize minds once more, in his own inimitable style. With him, he brings gifts: a tray of psychotropic truffles and a compilation of possibly his finest musical accomplishments to date, ‘Modern Re-Loves Volume 4’…

Crane’s canny ability to select hits from throughout the ages and inject them with his own scintillating electronics, as if they had always been there, has gained him plaudits not just from across the blogosphere, but also from taste makers at trusted stations like 6Music and KCRW.

As a result, the Mojo Filter AOR Disco Vintage Edits comps on Bandcamp have escalated far beyond the ‘cottage industry’ project they were initially intended as, and recently earned themselves a further 7”s sub-series on Dom Servini’s WHAWHA45's label.

Whilst boasting the same unmistakable character of his vintage edits, Mojo Filter’s Modern Re-Loves Volume 4 should be considered a firm homage to artists of the present era, offering up spritely reworks of timeless classics from José González, Jungle, Tiga and more…

A short time spent with the record will likely reveal to previous fans of Mojo Filter, a new sensitivity, ambition and grandeur in his compositions. It is also perhaps the most striking realisation of Crane’s desire to tell tales through music, since his own 2016 debut LP, Escape Aid. As such, it is strongly encouraged that listeners consider it as one whole listening experience, where time allows.

Crane’s inventive DJ sets and meticulously curated music schedules for the revered Lost Woods arena at Secret Garden Party, have often seen him resonate at more obscure frequencies than those represented in this album. As with all Mojo Filter records, however, the invitation for the listener to open the wrong door and tumble down the rabbit hole remains tantalizing seductive throughout, whether it’s a Jose Feliciano re-edit or, in this case, a remix of present day Anglo-Bahraini Psyche act, Flamingods, that you’re innocently listening to.

Indeed, Modern Re-Loves Volume 4 is every bit the mysteriously charged musical compound depicted in its cover art – exploratory, dubwise excursions, tropical deep-dives, fairytale orchestral re-imaginations, re-spiritualised festival grooves, complex ecstasies and bone-crunching bangers, are just some of the deviations enticingly framed within this Blyton-esque trip…

Where the road leads next for Mojo sound is wonderfully unclear, by design, but through this filter, the landscape looks very interesting…
